Freight train is a great song to getting started with playing fingerstyle guitar. This lesson features 4 versions of this song and with each version there will be some things added. This is the first version (easy) and it starts from the really beginning. It features some fundemantal basics like alternate bass, independent fingers etc. and It is based on 4 easy chords in C. It’s split up in 8 parts and I’ve tried to explain it step by step and in a slowed down way. Grade : Beginner Tablature …

Oh, forgot to add – I can’t grow my nails as I work in the building trade and they don’t last two minutes when I try (rough jobs)

Hi Dan, it isn’t necessary. I like it because it gives a clearer bass sound and I have more control over playing the bass part. But for a softer bass sound the thumb works out best.
A thumbpick is defintly something to get used to, I thought it was stupid in the beginning too, but it’s a matter of time. Best regards Jeroen

Do you think a thumb pick is necessary? I know TE uses one but other players (eg. fretkillr) play without and still sound good. I have a thumb pick but find it uncomfortable to use so what do you think?
