SOLD! Thank you to the winning bidder.

Vintage Dobro Parlor Guitar Prison Art Bottleneck Blues
I purchased this guitar from the “Memphis Music Hall of Fame” Museum in Memphis Tennessee.
It includes a signed “Certificate of Authenticity” from the Museum Director in 2003 that reads:
AUTHENTIC “Dobro Reproduction Metal Guitar” Created by a Joliet Prison Inmate
Also includes a press release letter documenting the closing of the museum in 2001.
Although this guitar is listed as a Dobro, it contains no resonator. It has a round neck and is set up to be played like a standard guitar. Great for Bottleneck Slide style guitar
36 1/2 inches long

13 inch lower bout

9 inch upper bout

3/8 inch string height at 12th fret

open geared tuners

open head stock

neck attached at 12th fret

heavy steel constructed body

steel bolt for bridge

National style tailpiece

1950? Kent pickup with jack in lower bout (recently installed)

button strap endpin

No case

If only this guitar could talk. Can you imagine the story it might tell! I am assuming the guitar was made in the prison metal shop. The neck appears to be consistent with the manufactured styles made in the 1930s. The body’s parlor shape and design also seems to be from this period. It is possible that the original wooden body got destroyed, and was used as a pattern to create this guitar in steel. It may be that the builder made the guitar to resemble the steel bodied Dobro guitars that were popular during the 1930s.

***VIDEO LESSON SERIES 1 VESTAPOL TUNING OPEN D and E

CIGAR BOX GUITAR LESSONS INCLUDED
CD PLAYS ON YOUR COMPUTER & CONTAINS SHEET MUSIC FILE

BOTTLENECK SLIDE GUITAR is based on an early one string folk instrument called the Diddley-Bow, and the traditional playing style of Hawaiian Guitar. The early Blues Masters of the 1920s and 30s, would place a bottleneck from a wine bottle, or a short piece of metal pipe on their finger. Using this as a slide, they could move up and down along the strings of a guitar imitating singing or the cries and moans of the human voice. This style uses an early method of tuning the guitar called open tuning, that is also used to play banjo. The guitar is tuned to a D or E chord, that actually makes it easier to learn music theory. The course starts with learning to play single note melody lines on one string. Next, by adding a second note harmony is created. Then a third note creates chords. The final song is embellished by adding strumming techniques and bottleneck slide.

THIS CD WILL NOT ONLY TEACH YOU HOW TO PLAY BOTTLENECK GUITAR, BUT HOW TO CREATE AND ARRANGE SONGS.

The Blues songs presented on this cd are in the style of Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Tommy Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Howlin’ Wolf, and Muddy Waters .Traditional Country Gospel songs are also taught because they were a major influence in the development of the Blues.

***VIDEO LESSON SERIES 2 SPANISH TUNING OPEN G and A
The Blues songs presented on this CD are intended to help the student explore the fingerboard of a Spanish tuned (Open G) guitar. Spanish Fandango, a turn of the century parlor guitar piece is taught to improve right hand picking technique. A detailed study of a typical 12 bar Blues progression offers endless possibilities for creativity. Two classic Mississippi Delta Blues songs, Walking Blues and Rollin’ and Tumblin’ are also presented for further study.

The guitar is tuned to a G or A chord, that actually makes it easier to learn music theory. The course starts (Series One) with learning to play single note melody lines on one string. Next, by adding a second note harmony is created. Then a third note creates chords. The final song is embellished by adding strumming techniques and bottleneck slide.
Plays on your PC or MAC (requires a DVD drive). Video is in .AVI format. Includes printable tablature music file. Over 2 hours long.

Welcome To Series 3 Lesson 1C First Part. In this installment, we will explore the idea of moving one pair of strings, Open D strings 2 and 1, to another location in Open G, strings 4 and 3. Both of these pairs of strings, have the same interval relationship of 5 over 1. The keys will sound different, but because they share the same string relationship, the musical ideas can be easily transfered. In addition, due to the different placement of the strings on the fingerboard, variations can be made using the adjacent strings.
